Munster Champions Bow Out Early as Kerry Progress Tipperary-1-08-1-19-Kerry

By Matthew Hurley at Semple Stadium

Kerry produced a workman like performance as they saw off the challenge of Munster Champions Tipperary.

This was the outcome that the vast majority would’ve predicted going into the game, and so it proved.

Much like the Clare game, Kerry weren’t at their very best, but they didn’t need to be as they swatted the now Division 4 team aside.

It took a while for the Kingdom to get going as Tipp defended deep, resulting in Peter Keane’s men registering nothing from play in the opening 10 minutes.

This was until the ever-reliable source of David Clifford produced a stupendous goal to set the Kingdom on their way, allowing them to push on.

As Tipp tried to keep the score down as much as they could, Kerry just kept piling on pressure with scores from Paul Geaney, Sean O’Shea frees and corner back Tom O’Sullivan.

The hosts did get a lifeline on 25 minutes however when a quick break resulted in a penalty after a foul on Conor Sweeney.

The star forward stepped up himself and dually slotted the ball into the net, leaving it a 4-point game.

That would be the holders’ last score before half time however, as O’Shea (x3) and Duirmuid O’Connor scores left it 1-11 to 1-3 at the break.

The second half was played at a slow pace as Kerry killed off the game as a contest.

A red card for Michael Quinlivan for lashing out at Gavin Crowley compounded Tipp’s evening.

Jason Lonergan then received a black card before the second water break and Tipp only managed 2 points in the fourth quarter.

Kerry pushed on however, with Killian Spillane putting over 3 points being the highlight, David Moran and Paudie Clifford also added extra scores as the Kingdom ran out easy winners.

Peter Keane now turn their attention to getting revenge on Cork after last years dramatic encounter while Tipp have set sights on Division 4 football for 2022.
