Limerick unbeaten run ends as Galway power to Victory

Limerick 1-17 - 0-26 Galway

By Cian Barry

2 years, 14 games…. Limericks unbeaten run has ended. Their last competitive defeat coming against Kilkenny in an All-Ireland Semi Final in 2019. And to tell you the truth they can have no complaints today with Galway putting in a very solid performance and well worth the 6 point margin to claim back to back wins. They practically led from start to finish bar once.

Once Galway took the lead in the 15th minute, they powered on scoring 7 of the next 9 points and led 10 points to 5 until Seamus Flanagan scored low past Eanna Murphy after he was set up by Gearoid Hegarty. This didn’t deter Galway though as 3 points on the trot stretched their lead to 5 again before Limerick closed out the half with two points to put a puck of a ball between them at the half way mark. Limericks struggles up front were highlighted by the fact that only 4 of their 1st half scores came from play. And although Limerick weren’t as fluid as usual, Galway’s defence were coming out best in most duels.

The start of the second half looked like Limerick were ready to come out fighting with two in a row to cut the deficit to the minimum but it would be as close as they got. A couple of points from sub Aaron Gillane just before the second water break left only two in it at 0-19 to 1-14. But again Galway showered their All Ireland credentials and powered to the finish line outscoring their opposition 0-7 to 0-3.

Again it does seem like a lot of scores this summer will be coming from placed balls as referees seem to be whistle happy all over the country, with over half the points today coming from frees.
