Limerick cruise past Waterford

Limerick-4-18-0-12-Waterford

By Matthew Hurley at LIT Gaelic Grounds

Limerick will go on to play Cork in 2 weeks’ time after a comprehensive win over Waterford.

As the saying goes, goals win games. While Limerick had that goal threat in abundance, scoring 4 and it could’ve been more, the Deise offered no such threat throughout the game.

Judging by the first 3 minutes, it seemed Shane Ronayne’s team were up for the fight putting in strong challenges and even had the first shot at the goal.

However, when Limerick settled the early nerves with a 4th minute goal from Robbie Burke, it was one way traffic from there.

Billy Lee’s side hit 1-6 in the first quarter to Waterford’s 0-4, with Cian Sheehan, Danny Neville, Cillian Fahy and Tommy Childs all getting their names on the scoresheet.

0-3 came from Waterford wing back Dermot Ryan, keeping them within touching distance.

It was a slow start after the first water break from the Treaty, who had plenty of opportunities to stick it in the back of the net, but came away with points instead.

After points from Michael Kiely, Darragh Corcaran and a Jason Curry free, Waterford seemed to be heading into the break with renewed confidence with two minutes left in the half.

That was until sucker punch number 2 arrived just before half time as Hugh Bourke produced a wonderful bit of skill, flicking the ball into his hands, before firing home a crucial goal, making it 2-9 to 0-7 at the break.

Again Waterford had a sense of false hope at the start of the half, with Corcaran getting the first point, but alas, it was their only score in a 22-minute spell.

With Limerick always bound to crank up the gears, this game became over as a contest fairly quickly, with goals from an Iain Corbett spot kick and a tap in from Fahy were the nails in the Waterford coffin.

Brian Donovan and Josh Ryan also bagged points after coming on as subs for the Treaty.

Brian Lynch came on and got 0-4 for the visitors, but it was too little, too late as their season came to an end this afternoon.

For Limerick, it’s a mouth-watering tie against Cork next. While there were still aspects of the game they need to improve on, they’ll be relishing welcoming the Rebels to the Gaelic Grounds.
