Allianz NHL Division 3B Preview
By Darren Mulvey
Fermanagh and Cavan will both look to build on last week’s draw in this weekend’s second round fixtures in Division 3B. Fermanagh host Leitrim while Cavan travel to play Louth, with throw in in Brewster Park and the Darver Centre of Excellence both scheduled for 2 pm.
The basement division is proving as close as was expected, with Louth scoring late last weekend to grab victory in Carrick on Shannon. The current Lory Meagher champions will benefit from grinding out a result on the road and will be confident ahead of the visit of Fermanagh. The Ernesidersracked up eighteen scores to their credit last weekend and held a four point advantage heading for the final whistle only for Cavan full forward Brian Fitzgerald to hit four unanswered points to snatch a draw. Fermanagh’s defence is porous and if Louth can recreate their scoring exploits from last weekend, they should have a few points to spare over the visitors.
Cavan done just enough to snatch a late draw last weekend and are on better footing than Leitrim heading into this clash. A Breffni win will put paid to any promotion dreams this current crop of Leitrim hurlers possess, so the Green and Gold should be very much up for this as it is a league defining gam. Leitrim are a physical outfit and if their backs can deny quality ball into the aforementioned Fitzgerald and the Sheanon brothers Colm and Cillian then they should be able to get themselves back on track in Breffni Park.
However, based on last weekend’s results, and with teams only getting back to match sharpness, neither game should have more than a few scores between the sides come the final whistle.
Verdict: Leitrim to open their account and Louth to be in pole position in the division come teatime Sunday..
